THE DREAM

Every once in a awhile...well...rarely...I've had a dream about one of my deceased family members. I still recall the one that included my dad and my oldest brother...Durward...that was maybe 10 years ago. It was real...as real as it could be...so I still recall it. Dad was the secondary figure in the dream...the main person was my brother Durward...and the wonderful hug that I gave him after not seeing him for a long time. I had last seen Durward in late 1969. He died in early 1970. This dream was...maybe...30 years later.

This morning...I had another dream. Ironically...I wouldn't have had the dream...if I had set my alarm properly. I generally wake up at 5:40am when my alarm goes off. Last night...I inadvertently forgot to set the alarm. At 6:05am...I woke up...realizing I had overslept...but I had just had my dream. Had I set the alarm properly...I would've missed the dream.

The dream...included my brother Durward...again...sitting in a living room chair. This time he was the secondary person in the dream. He was the age that I last remember seeing him...in his 30's. Dad was also in the dream...this time the main person...sitting in another chair near Durward...and he too was the age that I last recall him...in his 70's.

Dad was frail...but he was dad. I leaned down and gave him a hug...and patted him firmly...and called him 'old man'...and asked him how he was.

The hug was long...and real...as real as it could be. It felt good. I love those kinds of dreams.

  1. I've had a few dreams like that, Dan. Aren't you glad you overslept? :-)
